Hiashi Hyūga (日向ヒアシ, Hyūga Hiashi; ; ; ) is the head of the Hyuga Clan. He is the father of Hinata and Hanabi Hyūga, twin brother of the late Hizashi Hyūga, and uncle of Neji Hyūga.
Background[]
Hiashi was born seconds before his twin brother Hizashi, making Hiashi the head of the Hyūga clan and Hizashi the member of the branch house, whose only purpose in life would be to protect members of the main house. Years later when Neji was born, Hizashi became bitter that his son would never be able to reach his full potential as a member of the main house, causing him to be openly resentful of Hiashi and his daughters. Hiashi then being the one to brand Neji with the Hyūga Main Family's Juinjutsu further strained the relationship between the two brothers.
During a visit to Konoha by a Head Ninja of Kumogakure, who came to the village to sign a peace treaty, a young Hinata was kidnapped. Hiashi saved her by killing her kidnapper, only to discover that it was the Kumogakure ambassador. Kumogakure demanded Hiashi's head in return for the life he took or risk resuming open warfare between the two villages. Konoha, wishing to avoid another conflict, was compelled to comply, but was not willing to fulfill Kumogakure's desires of getting to study the Byakugan. The Hyuga clan elders suggested that Hizashi be used as a body double since his cursed seal would seal off his Byakugan upon his death. Although Hiashi tried to find an alternative, Hizashi insisted, saying that he would finally get to choose his own fate and that he could save his brother's life. Before going to his death he asked Hiashi to someday tell Neji about why he made his decision.
Originally, Hiashi had trained Hinata to become the successor of the Hyūga Clan. Hinata's lack of confidence ultimately led him to deciding she was not worthy and instead turned his attention to his younger daughter, Hanabi, while leaving Hinata in Kurenai Yuhi's care.
Personality[]
Hiashi's general personality is very stern and strict, as he assigns both his daughters arduous training, rarely complimenting their performance. This is especially true with Hinata; when she was assigned to Kurenai Yuhi, he told her that he was unconcerned about the possibility that she would die, saying that the Hyuga Clan had no use for a weak successor. In truth, it was not that he felt Hinata's talent or potential was weak, but her drive to succeed was too weak to be the successor of the Hyuga Clan. As the series progresses and she starts to her show her true dedication, he begins to openly cheer her on.
Part I[]
Hiashi makes his debut with Hanabi watching Neji's match during the final rounds of the Chunin Exams. He is amazed that Neji has been able to learn the main house's secret techniques by himself, but is disappointed by Neji's resentment of the main house and his strong belief in fate. After Neji loses to Naruto, and Neji seemed to have found himself at a crossroads in his life from Naruto's words, Hiashi decided to tell him about the circumstances surrounding Hizashi's death. Although Neji did not initially believe him, Hiashi's bowing to him for forgiveness showed him that it was true.
Hiashi assists in the defense of Konoha during the invasion by Sunagakure and Otogakure, repelling invaders with Eight Trigrams Palms Heavenly Spin. In the anime's filler arcs Hiashi, realizing separating the Hyuga clan into two houses was causing a huge rift in the clan, decided, as head of the clan, to try and mend this. He began training Neji regularly in their clan's full arts, something that was already considered a taboo by the rest of the Main House. His relationship with Hinata is seen improving, as he encourages her to do her best after seeing her more confident in herself.
Part II[]
Pain's Assault[]
Although he has yet to make an appearance in Part II, Hiashi is noted to be away with Hanabi during Pain's attack on Konoha. He leaves Hinata's protection to Kō Hyūga during his absence. In the anime, while he and Hanabi were dealing with political matters between the Hyūga and allied clans such as the Taketori clan, they received word about the attack. Upon returning to the village, they were horrified at the level of destruction following the attack, and even more surprised to hear that no one died. What truly amazed Hiashi was that it was Naruto who saved everyone, after he was protected and inspired by Hinata who risked her life to help Naruto. Later, having been inspired by her sister's actions, Hanabi cheerfully asked her father to train her more, to which Hiashi proudly agreed.[1]
He went over to his uncle and grandfather. 'What on earth happened to Hinata and Hanabi?' He asked, as his grandfather looked displeased, seeing the once light room dimly lit with a glazing of blood, veins and nerves strewn on the floor. 'Nothing, nothing. I want to show you something!' Neji said confidently, as they both looked surprised, seeing bits of blood on his clothing, with Hiashi having his Byakugan activated upon seeing Neji, with him looking in shock. 'So it was you who had ki-?!" Hiashi said in horror as Neji rushed over and clawed at his uncle, snapping down twice spearing his eyes and removing his uncle's eyes from his sockets so quickly that reacting was meaningless, even if the Byakugan was activated, for the Tenseigan was simply far superior, as Hiashi was still alive, albeit with blood pouring out of his empty sockets. His grandfather looked horrified upon witnessing his eldest son, the one he had raised and trained since birth and into adulthood, dying in front of him by a close family member. 'So it was you. This must be done, on order of death!' He said, using the handseal that activated the Hyūga's Main Family Juinjutsu which never appeared to his disbelief. 'How?!' He asked as Neji smiled and gently removed his own eyes, revealing six eyes and outstretched his hand to his grandfather. 'You want to know how? I have evolved my eyes.' Neji explained calmly as his grandfather looked visibly amazed, knowing that this wasn't possible, seeing a truly blind Neji in front of him. 'Are you human?!' He asked as Neji smiled. 'Oh, I am human. A human now beyond the mere familial system that caged me and my father in this clan!' Neji exclaimed as the Elder moved backwards, as though he was ready for combat. 'If you want them, take them. But still... this is your fate!' Neji said as he placed his own eyes back into his skull with his hand turning green as that was all that the Elder saw afterwards, as he lay on the ground nearly lifeless, with his body too aged to do much else other than watch as he witnessed his grandson observe his uncle's eyeballs. 'As much as I would want to take your eyes, leaving you with sight is an option that is needed... due to your decrepit body and ridiculous beliefs instilled unto the clan. Your eyes will wilt my body, causing the branches of my being to freeze over and become worthless... though for him, his fate will be within my hands.' Neji calmly explained as he peacefully smiled, still looking at his uncle's eyes, reminding himself of his father. 'You deserve to die after what you... put my father through for being born only a few moments after him.' Neji explained as he let his regret over not showing Hiashi the true nature of a Branch member reveal itself. as he then walked over to his grandfather and used the Localised Reincarnation Explosion on him again, summoning a black receiver to impale him; as he then lay dead, with his eyes glazed with a colour of death over them with Hiashi sensing something despite having no eyes as he heard what seemed to be a squelch as Neji then walked over to his uncle, removed his own eyeballs, placed Hiashi's own eyeballs inside of his sockets, with the ocular fluid still on his fingers, as he then activated the Byakugan of his uncle, which compared to his own, were almost inhuman. 'These are indeed impressive. But your sight is too narrow.' Neji explained, taking out Hiashi's eyes out of his sockets, and then intentionally dropped his eyes onto the ground, then controlling his own Tenseigan, as he then placed Hinata and Hanabi's eyes into each of his eye sockets, activating their Byakugan as he stomped on Hiashi's eyes with his sandal, leaving white fluid to spill onto his shoe, only to use the Tenseigan to turn that into both blood and white fluid at the same time, in spite of having them within his hands due to the fact that his ocular chakra was always going to be connected with Hinata and Hanabi's eyeballs on a spiritual and conceptual level. 'Now face your fate.' Neji then coldly said as he began to stomp on Hiashi's face... with his own Byakugan with his daughters' eyeballs as more and more blood spilled on Hiashi's limp body as he then took out his daughters' eyeballs and removed his sandal from Hiashi's face as he was barely breathing. 'I can still see even without the Byakugan, for the Byakugan is a mere tool for me given my eyes.' Neji then explained as he grabbed Hiashi and then forcefully shoved Hinata's right eye within his right eyesocket and Hanabi's left eye within his left socket as he looked horrified. Blood had clouded his vision completely. 'Neji!' He screamed in pain as no-one could hear him for he was truly alone as he saw Neji's Tenseigan staring at him blankly with their green irides, as he saw his own eyes in front of him. 'Neji, what are you doing?' He tried to ask, as upon activating the Byakugan of his two children, he felt their chakra washing through him, with his veins bleeding as he could barely sense their blackened sockets; the empty void of their dead eyes, only for him to see his face stomped on by Neji as he then dropped his eyes onto his face with ocular fluid and blood having seemingly devoured the upper part of his face, only for him to feel his eyes then being brutally crushed, this time permanently as he looked shocked. 'Now...Inner Path.' Neji calmly said, forcibly pulling Hiashi upwards as though he was a puppet and forcing his Byakugan to pop out by quite a distance as his pupils began to move without his consent, as he then summoned a green orb, forcing them back into their sockets as he then forced the Caged Bird Seal onto Hiashi, taking out his daughters' eyeballs and then using the Tenseigan to force the Caged Bird Seal on the eye sockets at the back of the lens with Hiashi staring into an infinite black void as blood poured out of his eyes as sight became meaningless to Hiashi as veins rocketed from all sides of his head and face and even his eyes. Neji looked at him with his Tenseigan and smiled. 'Now endure the punishment that Father and I have received from you.' Neji said coldly as Hiashi's sight was consumed by blindness and blood. He watched as he writhed in agony as his body was near-death; still seemingly clinging onto life. 'Its good seeing you suffer. Much like how I and Father suffered... in silence.' Neji whispered to him as Hiashi felt as though he wanted to rip out his eyes to end his suffering... only for Neji to do the deed for him, popping his out as blood devoured the floor as well as even Hinata's corpse alongside Hanabi's lifeless body. Red blood vessels began to scream out of his sockets as Neji smiled peacefully. He then forced them back into his sockets in the form of his original eyes, crushing Hinata and Hanabi's eyesockets in front of him, but in truth... they were already within him from the start. He then pushed him onto the ground. 'Damn you... Neji.' Hiashi said to him. His eyes then saw the world once more, spinning back into existence only for him to then lay dead as Neji then calmly stared at him. 'Now allow me to have my eyes returned, uncle.' Neji then coldly said, forcing his Tenseigan back into its known form, as he then walked over to Hiashi and stole his eyes with a single flick of the wrist and robes from his dead corpse, taking out his Tenseigan and doing the hand seal for the Caged Bird Seal, causing his head to explode as he seemingly removed his own Tenseigan and then had replaced his own Tenseigan with Hiashi's eyes; although since his sockets bore the Tenseigan's chakra that was his own, they simply reverted back to the Tenseigan. 'I shall now... train these... no... my eyes to their maximum potential.' Neji explained as he inevitably did the same to every other Hyūga member, as blood spilled throughout the entire clan, permanently tainted with the blood of the blind and narrow devoured by the man with the hand of a rogue wiping away their sight as they slept, only woken up by a claw-like finger as their treasured gift, given by birthright, had instantly been snatched away as their eyelids were then closed as though nothing had happened. 'I think... there is one last place to head to.' He thought to himself as he then seemingly crushed their eyes, walking out of the Hyūga compound, never to be seen again."
After Hiashi withstands Pain's Assault, he sleeps for the sake of rest alongside the rest of his clan. The morning after, he discovers his daughters' dead bodies and realises that Neji is the cause of it. Shortly thereafter, both he and his father attempt to engage the rogue Hyūga in battle, only for the clan leaders of the past and the present have their fight cut short with Hiashi having his eyes removed, although, unknown to Neji, Hiashi is still alive, albeit barely clinging to what little life he has left. Shortly after being physically controlled by Neji and having his daughters' eyes within his skull, he eventually has them removed and then has his original eyes placed back into his sockets; and then passes away because of his injuries.
Abilities[]
As the a member of the Hyūga clan, Hiashi possesses the Byakugan, which gives him an almost 360-degree field of vision, except for a small blind spot at the back of the neck. Also, as the head of his clan, he is well-versed in all of his clan's secret techniques. During Orochimaru's invasion, Hiashi demonstrated tremendous skill by repelling several Sound and Sand ninja away with one Eight Trigrams Palms Heavenly Spin.
He can also use the Byakugan to see through multiple countries and its inhabitants, as demonstrated in the attack against Pain.
